Plagiarism AND "prevent*"--MAIN
"Prevent*" AND (plagiarism OR academic dishonesty)--Second Choice
Newspaper: Preventing Plagiarism
Ellen Whyte. "Preventing plagiarism :[Main/Lifestyle Edition]. " New Straits Times 25 Jan. 2007, ProQuest Newsstand, ProQuest. Web. 21 Feb. 2011.
I chose this newspaper article because it has everything I am looking for in it. The article describes what plagiarism is and then goes on describing how to prevent accusations of plagiarism for the writers.
Scholarly Journal: Electronic Plagiarism
Charles L McLafferty Jr, and Karen M Foust. "Electronic Plagiarism as a College Instructor's Nightmare-Prevention and Detection. " Journal of Education for Business 79.3 (2004): 186-189. Platinum Periodicals, ProQuest. Web. 21 Feb. 2011.
I chose this scholarly journal because it is a guide for teachers on how to teach students to not plagiarize. Students can use this information to make sure they are not plagiarizing on papers and other projects.
Magazines: Heading off a Bogus Paper Chase
Keating, Susan Katz. "Heading off a Bogus Paper Chase. " Insight on the News 17 Apr. 1989: Platinum Periodicals, ProQuest. Web. 21 Feb. 2011.
There were not too many magazines to choose from using these search terms. I tried adding academic dishonesty to the list using the OR feature with plagiarism but it gave me pretty much the same thing. I chose this magazine article because it talks about students using other peoples work.
This activity was very informative to me for using ProQuest. I realized that the scholarly journals and newspapers include many articles that are about plagiarism. However, the magazines don't contain very many articles that include plagiarism and prevention. I did find that I received more articles all together about plagiarism when I included the plagiarism OR academic dishonesty in the advanced search.

ReplyDeleteYou did a good job identifying useful articles. And you articulated how you modified your search and where you were best able to find your results. Research journals are probably not going to cover preventing plagiarism so much, but may look at evaluating methods of preventing plagiarism or something like that. Your article from a scholarly journal doesn't look like a research article as much as an informational article. What ASPECT criteria did you evaluate with? I hope you find it easier to use ProQuest for your next assignment, remember practice makes is somewhat easier.
